Orme architecture are looking for an Architectural Technician to join its growing Somerset based practice.

We are an ambitious, award winning practice based in Baltonsborough and have a range of exciting and challenging projects planned in a variety of sectors working with high profile clients. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in some bespoke residential schemes through to exciting larger commercial projects.

The ideal candidate will have strong construction knowledge and most importantly a positive ‘can-do’ attitude with a willingness to take responsibility and solve problems. They will be capable of working both autonomously and within a team whilst always delivering to tight deadlines.  They should be acquainted with current UK Building regulations, together with a working knowledge of all RIBA work stages. Accuracy and attention to detail and design is vital.


Some of the responsibilities of this position include:

  • production of drawings and technical information from concept phases through to completion with supervision.

  • the ability to contribute to a design process, solving architectural and technical problems

  • an understanding of construction methods and building systems

  • good technical design skills and a sound knowledge of statutory regulations

  • preparing and developing where required, drawings, models, images and other documents relating to the design

  • liaising where appropriate, with members of the external design team and other associated organisations or companies

The applicant should:

  • be able to demonstrate experience in meeting planning policy, residential and commercial design, ensuring quality standards are maintained and UK Building Regulations.

  • have experience in construction detailing

  • have sound communication, interpersonal and organisational skills

  • excellent IT skills; including Microsoft Office and CAD

  • the ability to liaise effectively and confidently both internally and externally


Salaries are negotiable and commensurate with the experience of the candidate.

Whilst you will be a qualified Architect, finding the right person for this role is more important to us than the level of experience. A proven track record in leading and managing a wide variety of both clients and internal teams successfully will be a key strength for you. This combined with your innovative design skills, your flair for being able to motivate people at all levels and driving projects to successful completion will make this the right role for you.

Remuneration for this role will be in line with the experience, but some experience working with UK planning and building regulations is essential as is your own transport due to our rural location. We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Build It awards ‘Best Self Build Architect 2018’. The shortlisted project ‘North by Northwest’, seen here, was a build which perfectly fitted the client’s brief, combining a contemporary design allowing the far-reaching views to be amplified whilst still maintaining low energy emission, increasing sustainability. With its simple form, timber clad elevations and green roof, the dwelling is an amazing example of a new dwelling which implements innovative, high quality design in a rural location.

Congratulations are in order for two members of our team, Sam and Will who have successfully completed their Postgraduate certificate in Professional Practice in Architecture. This gives them the very well-earned title of Architect and it’s great to watch our team grow as we go from strength to strength. A huge well done!

Orme are a young and dynamic, design-led architectural practice based in Somerset and are recruiting for an experienced post Part III Architect.  

The ideal candidate will have ideally 3 years post part 3 RIBA experience in the residential sector and some commercial, educational or hospitality sector experience would be beneficial.   

This is an excellent opportunity for a determined and ambitious individual to gain responsibility within a dynamic practice. The successful applicant will be rewarded with an opportunity to develop and gain experience of a range of projects at all stages of design and construction. We are looking for someone who will ask questions, take the initiative and become a key member of the team. 

Excellent communication and presentation skills are required together with a positive “can-do” attitude. You will need good technical knowledge and experience in architectural detailing and of course a strong flair for design. This is an opportunity for an individual who is conscientious, has meticulous attention to detail, able to take the initiative and work comfortably both leading and within a team.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced a shortlist of 13 new and exciting buildings for the RIBA Awards in the South West of England and we are delighted the Mill Farm Barns has made that list . Over the coming weeks the RIBA judging panel will be visiting a range of innovative and high-quality buildings right across the South West and the Winner will be announced in Bath on the 16th of May .

RIBA South West regional director Jon Watkins said ‘RIBA Awards always bring out the best in local and national architects across our vast region, and this year’s shortlist offers quality, diversity of type and scale, excellence in design, and lots of delight’
